How big will my puppy get?

The size of your puppy depends on its parentage. A general rule of thumb is to add both the parents weights together and divide by 2 to get an average adult weight on the puppies.  Within any litter there may be puppies that fall above or below the projected adult weights. Riverbend Doodle babies mature to around 35 to 45 pounds.

I have my puppy, now what do I do?

  • SCHEDULE an 8 week vet visit for your new puppy. Per the RiverBend contract, your puppy should be seen by a vet of your choice within 5 DAYS of pickup (to prevent the health guarantee being voided). Proof of visit is required to be emailed, texted, messaged via your normal communication route with RiverBend.
  • Heartgard and Nexguard are due at 8 weeks of age!
  • AKC Reunite. Your puppy has been micro chipped however you must enroll in the desired program of your choice. Information and stickers with microchip numbers can be found on the vet records, contract, AKC reunite documentation and the back of your puppy folder. Please have your puppy scanned at the vet to verify.
  • Trupanion Pet Insurance. FREE for one month. Please register and check for vets in your area on the approved list.
  • SEND US PICTURES! We have a private group page called RiverBend Doodle Family where all previous owners can be located. It’s a great way to network! Compare stories, see siblings, get advice and so on. We love these puppies and want to stay in touch!

What feeding schedule do you recommend?

  • ½ cup 3 times a day (if possible) or ¾ cup 2x a day, then gradually increase weekly
  • Seek the advice of your veterinarian as well
  • We suggest limiting feeding and watering schedules to 15-20 minutes and then removing food/water. Separate puppies to a small area during feedings and immediately go potty when time is up. To prevent excited pee, if that becomes an issue, limit or eliminate speaking to them until they go out to potty.
  • Soft stool, upset stomachs, etc- add pumpkin to food or use pepto bismol - ask Siri, Alexa or Google for suggested amounts.

Any recommendations on house breaking or crate training?

  • CONSISTENCY! CONSISTENCY! CONSISTENCY! Set a schedule, set alarms, just like a baby- puppies thrive on a schedule and it will make your life so much easier when you KNOW their pee/poop schedule. What they look and act like when they need to go potty! They will have a pee/poop pace-walk-hop or maybe their own special moves?!!?!?
  • Keep a STRICT feeding schedule! Limit food and water to those times, offering water before going potty
  • Puppies have been introduced to a crate, a puppy pad, grass and litter box trained to use equine pellets. Litter box training transitions to grass/outside training VERY well.
  • Rewards and TREATS and silly, high-pitched, corny “good girl!!!! Good Boy!!!! YAY’s!!!!! Claps! Cradling and belly rubs! (an absolute favorite of Crowe and Reba, our poodle babies). Take treats out to potty and REWARD every pee and poo! Act crazy, be excited, they’re only this little once!
  • CRATES! Yes, they ARE a necessity! Crates can make your life easier, their lives more relaxed and most of all can keep them safe! How……..
    • Crates are essential in housebreaking!
    • Crates should not be used for punishment and be associated with nothing but bad behavior but a place where they can relax and feel comfortable (it does take time).
    • Crates can keep them safe! Goldendoodles are notorious “sock eaters”! I don’t know why but they will eat an entire sock, hair bows, wood, sticks, really…. Nothing is safe during the puppy stages. While you’re gone, sleeping or working use the crate to protect them from ingesting something that will cost you a HUGE vet bill in the long run.

What size crate should I get?

  • Medium size crate for dogs up to 50-60 pounds with a divider. Use the divider to limit space during crate training and housebreaking.
  • Crate puppies while you or your family eat. No begging occurs and please NO TABLE FOOD!
  • Crate puppy during night. Cover crate with a blanket, they will whine, cry, act as if they’re dying. TOUGH it out. Within a day or so, at most a week, they’ll be GOLDEN
  • Crate throughout the day, short time periods to introduce the crate

What do I do about grooming?

  • Puppies have been introduced to grooming since 4 weeks of age. We consistently keep puppies hygiene shaved (bottoms, bellies, privates, ears, and eyes)
  • Find a groomer and schedule and appointment to get the puppy acquainted with the grooming routine, WAIT UNTIL THEY HAVE HAD ALL VACCINATIONS!!!!!!!!
  • Know your puppies/dogs COAT. Curly hair requires much more attention than wavy coats.
  • Doodles need brushed several times a week
  • Doodles need ears cleaned routinely and hair pulled! Consult your vet and groomer for advice!
  • Doodles require consistent grooming
  • Doodles hair will MATT and it can be painful

Any training tips?

  • Doodles are SMART. I mean, like super smart!
  • Consider basic obedience training. Doodles love to socialize, a well behaved puppy and adult dog will make trips, park visits, and daily life so much better
  • Teach basic commands at home
  • Watch YouTube videos
  • Whatever you do, BE CONSISTENT
